What is powder coating?

Powder coating is when organic powder goes through an electrostatic application to make it stick to metal. The powder is cured (made hard) through either baking or heating, as this allows for a continuous coating to occur.

During the powder coating process, pre-treatment, powder application and curing in a temperature-controlled oven will occur.

Can you powder coat plastic?

While it is possible to powder coat plastic, it’s important to note that the material must be able to withstand curing temperatures of around 130°C. Additionally, plastic is an insulator rather than a conductor like metal, which can affect the way the powder coat adheres and cures. To overcome this, hot coat applications or conductive pretreatments are often required.

That said, at Frederick Cooper, we would always recommend a wet paint finish for plastic components. Wet paint offers a more consistent, controlled, and aesthetically pleasing result on plastic substrates, making it a more suitable and reliable option in most cases.

Can you powder coat stainless steel?

Yes! Due to stainless steel’s layer of chromium oxide, the paint has the ability to adhere to the metal well and maintain a long-lasting finish

How to remove powder coating?

There are four ways powder coating can be removed:

Chemical stripping – This involves submerging the part in solvent and neutralising the caustic solution before rinsing and drying the part.
Thermal stripping – This usually involves an industrial oven as it’s needed to heat the part to the point of the powder coat losing its adhesion or the part combusting.
Abrasive blasting – This is used when a part needs to be refinished. By abrasive blasting or sunblasting the part, a slight texture is left on the part, allowing it to be given a new powder coat.
Laser removal – This is where a specialised laser burns off the powder coating layer, resulting in the underlying material staying intact. This is ideal for temperature-sensitive materials like aluminium.
